PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a polyester plastic commonly used for bottling water,
soft drinks, cosmetics and other liquid products. Although popular for packaging, PET contributes
to landfill waste and the use of natural resources. For example, in 2002, 2 billion-lbs. of PET
bottles were wasted, and these bottles could take between 700 to 2,000 years to break down.
There are currently four tons of PET wasted for every ton recycled—yet just eight 16-oz. PET bottles
can make 1 sq. ft. of polyester carpet, one x-large t-shirt, two baseball caps or one large mop
